Donald Trump said today in a press conference that he is doing the military a “great favor” by instating the ban on transgendered individuals in the military. The ban itself is on hold currently because of the rising tensions with North Korea.
Yesterday, in a press conference from Bedminster New Jersey, Trump said, “It’s been a very confusing issue for the military, and I think I’m doing the military a great favor.”
He is taking a “working vacation” and is spending 17 days at Trump National Golf Course. On Tuesday the President conducted a very rare press conference from Bedminster, New Jersey.
Trump tweeted on July 26th that, “After consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military.” The end of the tweet went on to cite financial reasons as the cause for the ban.
Almost instantaneously it was reported that the military already spends five times more for Viagra than it has for transgender therapy. The generals he mentions in the tweet came out almost as quickly stating that they have not advised the President to take this course of action. In fact, many came out in vocal opposition to the ban.
The White House has gone ahead and started preparing guidance for the Defense Department on how to implement the ban; possibly including encouraging transgender soldiers to take early retirement. At this time, however, all things have been put on hold because of the crisis in North Korea.
The National Center for Lesbian Rights and LGBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders filed a federal lawsuit this week challenging the ban. There are several more groups expected to file their lawsuits as well.
Several people have released statements condemning Trump’s remarks. “President Trump’s shameful comments are an absolute insult to our nation’s armed forces and a slap in the face to the thousands of transgender service members who are willing to risk their lives every day for this country,” said Ashley Broadway-Mack, president of the American Military Partner Association.
She added, “Their selfless service and sacrifice for this nation is no ‘complicated issue.’ Military leadership and the far majority of Americans support all of our nation’s heroes, and President Trump should start doing the same.”
Donald Trump’s delusional comments regarding his reckless ban on transgender troops are demonstrably false and lack any basis in reality. Donald Trump’s attack on transgender troops weakens our military and is a betrayal of those who wear the uniform. Fifty-six retired admirals and generals, Republican and Democrat elected officials, and a majority of the American public have all condemned Trump’s misguided and despicable policy that will do nothing but undermine military readiness and harm brave transgender service members and their families. – Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign
Trump is No Friend of the LGBT Community
He stated in the press conference that he has “great respect” for LGBT people and that he “got a lot of votes” from them during the election. Both of those statements are demonstrably false.
In fact, it has been shown that he got 14% of the LGBT vote. That is compared to the 78% that Hillary Clinton received.
Concerning the “great respect” he mentions, well, that is so far afield that it’s shocking even he still believes it. Wait, not really. However, he has done nothing to show any respect for the community. Quite the opposite is true.
The ban is the final in a long list of hateful things he has done to the community. He also made it harder to enforce Obama’s ban on anti-LBGT discrimination by businesses that work with the federal government. The bloated one also rescinded guidelines protecting transgender students. He argued that federal laws against sex discrimination do not extend to sexual orientation.
With friends like that, who needs enemies?
