There are so many things you can do that will help make a difference in the world and right now it is more important than ever to make a change. Freedom is under attack by our President. If ever there was a time to get involved, it is right now.
Don’t think you have what it takes to make a difference?
As Trump would say, “WRONG.”
As a matter of fact, read on as we show you how to take the first steps. It isn’t as hard as you might think.
5 THINGS YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW
The truth is, you don’t have to attend a rally or a protest to affect change. You don’t have to volunteer or frankly, do a single thing that you aren’t comfortable doing. So many people see what is going on and feel powerless to change it. You are only powerless if you never try.
One of the greatest things I have done in my lifetime was attending the Women’s March in January. The hope and the passion that experience restored is with me to this day. I wish I had known sooner, though, that I could make an impact without getting on a bus.
Read on and discover 5 things you can do in less time than it takes to order a pizza.
#1 CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES
Call your Representatives. Yes, I know you are probably tired of hearing this one. However, it is number one for a reason. This is hands-down the most effective thing you can do from the comfort of your home. They keep a tally and record what each person calls about and what they said.
Calling is more important than marching. It’s more important than a rally. This is a direct line to the men and women voting on your behalf.
It’s not hard and I will outline for you here exactly how to plan and execute this in the easiest possible terms.
First, you need to figure out who your reps are. To find your Representatives click here.
- Enter your zip code
- Click the red button that says find your rep by zip
- Scroll down for their telephone number
If you are trying to contact your Senators click here.
- In the upper right-hand corner there is a picture of an American flag and a drop down box, click on that
- Select your state from the drop down box
- It will bring up a list of your state Senators and their telephone numbers and address
HAVE A PLAN
You don’t have to create a two-page double space outline here. However, if you are like me, sometimes when people answer the phone I get flustered. I find it helpful to jot down what I am calling about.
For example, today I will call my Congressional rep. to demand that he withdraw his support of President Trump. On my paper, I wrote down “withdraw his support of President Trump, racist agenda.” I also wrote his name on there, just in case.
#2 JOIN GROUPS
When I say join groups, I realize that is terribly broad. What I mean here is join any group. Still broad, I know. Stay with me here.
I am specifically talking about online groups. There are two types of online groups. You can be yourself, like on Facebook, or you can be anonymous like on Reddit.
Facebook makes it really easy. Because of how thoroughly they track what you’re doing, the groups they recommend tend to be decent. At least insofar as jiving with your interests.
Here is my strategy on Facebook: My motto? You won’t know if you don’t try. I join groups. I join a lot of groups. Most of them end up being pretty crappy. I have found some true gems, however. It makes the work worth the effort. I have made some amazing friends in groups that I now count as some of my closest allies.
By the way, it is just as easy to leave the groups you don’t like as it is to join them in the first place.
CREATE YOUR OWN GROUP
Another great thing on Facebook is the option to create your own group. A lot of people I know don’t like to post divisive things because these days it WILL spark a fight. I personally unfriended over a hundred people after the election. But that is not an option for all of us.
Instead, create your own group. You know who amongst your friends shares your views. Create a secret group, choose private as your setting, and now you have a safe space to share your thoughts. With yourself as moderator, you can invite whomever you wish and you can ban those who don’t belong.
Reddit calls itself the front page of the internet. In many ways this is true. It is a prolific site that you can easily lose hours on. The best part, though, is the anonymity.
You are totally anonymous on Reddit.
The groups on there are called subreddits. Here is what you need to know: There is a subreddit for almost everything. There are not the same filters and standards as Facebook has. You can find death, porn, and kittens being adorable.
Reddit is not for children. There are warnings on graphic content. You don’t have to look hard for it, but you won’t see anything you don’t click on.
Note that there are many more groups online. You can find social media sites that suit your every whim.
#3 RECONNECT WITH A TRUMP SUPPORTER
This may be the hardest but most worthwhile thing you ever do. If you are like me, there are more than a few Trump supporters that you have been avoiding. I have made a few inroads lately and that feels pretty good. If you want to make a difference, this is one of the most important things you can do.
If you are like me, there are more than a few Trump supporters that you have been avoiding.
Don’t go crazy here. Just pick one. Just one Trump supporter that you have been avoiding. You don’t even have to talk about politics. Just drop them a line. Throw a text out there and ask them how they are doing.
Remind them that we have more in common than we have things that divide us. Compassion and an open heart are two of the greatest gifts you can give the world. And when you do eventually get around to politics – listen. Ask questions. Draw out their reasons for supporting the president but not with the intention of changing their mind or attacking them. Find out why they support him and you will hear what they are passionate about. It is quite likely you share the same passions but come at them differently. They may have never considered that there are other ways to
Find out why they support him and you will hear what they are passionate about. It is quite likely you share the same passions but come at them differently. They may have never considered that there are other ways to embrace that passion. Share respectfully. If nothing else, your approach will give them pause.
#4 DONATE MONEY
This can seem simple at first glance, however, do your research and be careful about who you support financially. A lot of the mainstream charities aren’t so great.
The good news is, there are pages like Progressive Liberal/Activism Starts Here that have done the work for you. Simply find the topic you are passionate about, click on the drop-down button for Donate and a list of vetted charities will appear. Easy-peasy.
If you can make a sizable donation, you should but most places allow you to donate as little as one dollar.
#5 LEARN ABOUT SOMETHING
It only takes a few minutes to read one article a day. Start small if you have to. I am not recommending that you obsess over things. However, if you want to create change, one of the best ways is having productive conversations. You cannot have that without being current on the subjects.
Granted, the news cycle moves at the speed of light. Even those of us who do this for a living struggle to keep up with what is going on. Notifications fly in all day long. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t move slow and learn about one thing a day.
These 5 things are just a few of the things you can do with very little effort but when they are combined with the efforts of others, you have suddenly contributed to a movement. It takes almost no time at all to do something helpful.
The only thing that keeps you from changing the world is yourself. So what if you only make one phone call? That was enough. So what if you can only manage to share memes amongst your friends in a Facebook group? Eventually, that will help you make bigger moves. If not, even just those conversations can create a ripple.
In the time it takes to order a pizza, you can start to change the world. That is not hyperbole. The butterfly effect is a real thing. You never know what you can create with a tiny ripple.
