UPDATE: 2:30 EDT, 7-18-17 The Senate has just set aside a vote for clean repeal without replacement for Obamacare. Sens. McCain and Collings have both called for a traditional approach to any new healthcare legislation whereby both parties have discussion and input into the final bill.
President Donald Trump took to Twitter once again with more conflicting tweets and mixed messages concerning ObamaCare. Within a span of fewer than twelve hours the President has contradicted himself and hasn’t even bothered to fix his mistakes. Indeed, it’s all still on Twitter for the world to see.
Trump on ObamaCare
It started last night. The Senate took a vote on the new health care bill. Before the vote, Trump took to Twitter to encourage Republicans. He tweeted that “Republicans should just REPEAL failing Obamacare now & work on a new healthcare plan that will start from a clean slate. Dems will join in!”
After the vote had failed to pass, he took to Twitter once again this morning and said “As I have always said, let ObamaCare fail and then come together and do a great healthcare plan. Stay Tuned!”
Does the President of the United Stated understand that repealing a law and simply allowing one to fail are two very different things? He didn’t even delete the previous tweet. It’s very much like he has no idea. Once again showing his true colors to the American people via Twitter.
The Senate Vote
The Senate voted last night on a version of the health care repeal and replace bill. Trump was hosting a few Senators at the White House when he got the news that Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) were both no votes. They joined Senators Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) in opposition to the bill.
Mitch McConnel announced after the vote that he would like to take another vote. This vote would be on a “clean repeal” law. This would mean that they would just repeal Obamacare without anything to take its place.
Trump has been going back and forth for quite some time now. He has been vacillating between repeal and replace options and allowing Obamacare to fail.
As was reported last week, however, Obamacare is showing signs of stabilizing.
Trump once again took to twitter to express how he feels about the pesky legislative process. He tweeted, “The Senate must go to a 51 vote majority instead of current 60 votes. Even parts of full Repeal need 60. 8 Dems control Senate. Crazy!”
It’s either crazy or an excellent example of exactly how President Obama felt for eight years.
He went on and tweeted more. Saying “With only a very small majority, the Republicans in the House & Senate need more victories next year since Dems totally obstruct, no votes!”
The Democrats have been pushing the Republicans to drop the repeal and replace and simply work on a version of Obamacare that fixes what needs work. They do not want to throw over 20 million people off health insurance while the suits in Washington decide what to do.
Cooler heads continue to push for sensible legislation that would work for those on both sides of the aisle. Sen. James Lankford (R-Oklahoma) said, “I’m still optimistic that we can and because we must. This is kind of a no fail moment that you have to be able to resolve all these issues,”
Considering how confused most of us are by President Tweet So Much, we can rest assured that some of our elected officials are most certainly just as bewildered as the rest of us.
